Dive into the action of the MedPAN Regular Training Programme

Designed to strengthen the operational capacities of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) on targeted topics, the Regular Training Programme of the MedPAN network is being gradually implemented since 2019.

Three training modules have been developed in 2020, and 4 are in preparation, which will complement the fisheries, financing and mobile species training cycles to eventually offer MPAs a complete educational pathway on these key topics.

Three training modules, on cetacean conservation, marine turtle conservation at sea and marine habitat, species and pressure mapping in shallow coastal waters, are currently available in the species and ecosystems training cycle, which will be enriched in 2021 with a second marine turtle training course, focusing on the monitoring and protection of nesting sites. Both marine turtle training courses will be implemented in Zakynthos Marine National Park as soon as the situation allows.

The training on cetacean conservation and monitoring in Mediterranean MPAs was the subject of a first 5-day session in Port-Cros National Park in October 2020 for managers of 3 Croatian MPAs and 1 Italian MPA. Check out the video of the training

The financing training cycle now includes a module on business planning for MPAs. A first training session was to be hosted by Brijuni National Park in Croatia earlier this year but was redesigned in an online format and delivered over a total of 4 weeks in early 2021. Nine MPA management organisations benefited from this training. Another financing training module will be developed in 2021.

Finally, the fisheries training cycle will be initiated in 2021 with the development of 2 training modules.

New training sessions will hopefully take place soon, but in the meantime, the teaching materials used in the framework of these training courses will be made available to the MPA community on the MedPAN website.
